The Who

The Who are one of the most well know rock bands of the 60s fallowing closely behind the Beatles. The Who was started by Rodger Daltrey and included Pete Townshend, John Entwhisle, and Keith Moon. The band was started in 1964 in England where they had many chart topping hits. After three years of fame in the UK, the band finally had a chart topping hit in the United States. "Happy Jack" got in the top ten when it was released in 1967. The Who has been called the greatest Mod, pop rock, and classic rock group of all time. Mod is just a term for a subculture of British culture. People dressed in suits and rode scooters around. The Who were also world famous for their instrument destruction. They would destroy guitars or drums after they finished a show. The Who changed their music over the course of the 60s and 70s. The first song " Happy Jack" is a happier, more lively song. The next clip shows a newer Who song, "Who Are You". This song was made in the mid 70s and you can see how much the band changed from a cheerful band to a more rock, punk, even a little techno band. This clip shows the who performing one of their later songs but it also shows the iconic instrument destruction after the show. The Who were the first band to do this on stage and fans loved it. Guitar smashing has become such a huge part of rock and roll history and itmany artist do it. But it had such a big impact that it became almost a tradition with certain things. Such as the opening of a new hard rock cafe. They will celebrate the opening with a guitar smash.

The packet overview

In our reading today we read about segregation, cold war and communism, and Vietnam. The 50s was a time of great contraversy. Many people were racist and this was when people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. were speaking out against it. The cold war with USSR was also a big deal. We had a president that was not very politicly hardened. He was indecisive but he still made many great advances for our country like balancing the budget.
